The start of something big
Cadillac has now revealed details of the all-new 2023 LYRIQ, which as well as being an entirely new nameplate for the luxury brand also represents a huge move towards a future of more sustainable luxury mobility. The announcement of the first all-electric Cadillac is a big deal by any standard, but this exciting new model is more than just another new EV because it’s the first evidence of Cadillac’s commitment to all its brand new models being 100% powered by electricity from now on.
The LYRIQ isn’t an existing Cadillac SUV platform that’s been tweaked and adapted to accommodate an all-electric powertrain. The LYRIQ is an entirely new model from the ground up and it’s a powerful symbol of the Cadillac brand for the future.
The buzz around this all-new Caddy isn’t just reserved to its stunning styling or its high-tech interior because Cadillac is throwing down the gauntlet by making this five-seat luxury crossover SUV competitively priced than any of the current competition. A promised driving range on a full charge of the battery of more than 480 km is an impressive statistic to start off with, but when you then add into the mix the stunning styling and what promises to be a fabulously luxurious and hi-tech interior it’s certainly looking as though Cadillac could be knocking it out of the park with its first-ever EV.
Desirable by any measure
Designing the front fascia of an EV poses questions for any automaker as a traditional grille at the front isn’t required due to a lack of an internal combustion engine. At the moment, some choose to go down the route of a fake grille to retain some semblance of aesthetic convention, but the LYRIQ boasts a bold crest-shaped “grille” illustrated by lights on the front fascia which illuminates differently as the driver approaches or walks away from the LYRIQ.
The overall shape of the LYRIQ will still be recognizable as a midsize SUV when it drives through Kleinburg, Vaughan, Brampton, King City, Nobleton, Mississauga, or anywhere else in the Greater Toronto Area. However, there are plenty of cutting-edge styling cues that leave you with no doubt that the 2023 LYRIQ is something special.
Numbers that matter
At the heart of the LYRIQ’s electric powertrain will be a 100-kWh battery pack situated in the vehicle’s floor between the front and rear axles. The location of the battery is designed to deliver a low centre of gravity and a perfect 50/50 weight distribution for this integrated EV platform. The LYRIQ will therefore be about great handling and performance as well as being electrically powered.
When the Cadillac is launched we expect it to feature one electric motor driving the rear wheels and that promised range on a full charge of more than 480 km. It’s also expected the EV powertrain will put out 340 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque, but additional powertrain options will eventually be offered featuring enhancements such as dual motors, all-wheel-drive, and even more power and performance.
